What happens if I don’t pay?
Unpaid on-street parking citations may be subject to additional fines and collection actions. Please pay timely to avoid additional costs and inconveniences.
If the citation and late payment penalty remain unpaid 60 days after the citation issuance date, a $30 Administrative Collection Fee will be added to the amount due.
Unpaid parking citations are also subject to various collection actions including but not limited to Department of Motor Vehicle Registration Withholding, liens against wages or bank accounts, and automatic withholding of state income tax refunds or lottery winnings as well as booting.
- A “Stop” may be placed against a vehicle’s registration and license plate renewal for unpaid parking citations. This is called Vehicle Registration Withholding and a $25 fee is added to the account and must be paid before the “stop” may be released from the account. Once a “Stop” has been placed, to have it removed immediately, payment must be made in cash or certified funds; if payment is made via check or credit card please allow 5 business days for the payment to process before the “Stop” is removed.
- All unpaid parking citations are also submitted to the Virginia Department of Taxation’s Set-Off Debt Collection Program whereby state income tax refunds or lottery winnings may be intercepted and applied to the unpaid account. A $25 fee is added to each account to cover the costs of taking this action.
- Any vehicle with 3 or more unpaid parking citations may also be subject to Vehicle Wheel Immobilization or Booting. A $25 Boot Removal Fee is also automatically added to the amount due.
- Accounts unpaid after six months will be automatically forwarded to a collections agency and an addition twenty percent (20%) fee will apply to the balance due.
Effective April 3, 2017, the City of Roanoke has forwarded unpaid accounts older than six months to a collection agency; therefore, an additional fee of 20% is owed on any account that is more than six months old past the original citation issuance date.
